"You're going to cost me my job" - Bengals' head coach handed blunt Joe Burrow reality check

The Cincinnati Bengals reached Super Bowl LVI in February 2022 but have struggled to return. They lost the AFC Championship Game the following season, and their fortunes have since declined further.

That has raised questions about head coach Zac Taylor's future. Speaking on the Speakeasy podcast, retired NFL veteran Boss Ward initially questioned Taylor's job security but reconsidered because of Joe Burrow's recurring injuries.

Ward pointed to Burrow's college achievements and early NFL success before questioning his recent availability. He argued that those accomplishments mean little when the star quarterback cannot stay healthy.

"You can't make the club in the tub," Ward said. He also criticized Burrow's off-field activities and stressed the need to prioritize football. Ward then imagined what Taylor might tell his quarterback about the impact of his absences:

"Come on, Joe. [..] You're going to cost me my job. Just give me something, Joe. Help me. Help me."

Zac Taylor's future tied to his QB1's availability

Zac Taylor's position becomes harder to assess when Joe Burrow cannot lead the offense. Injuries have repeatedly disrupted the Bengals' plans despite their past Super Bowl and AFC Championship Game appearances.

On the same episode of the podcast, Boss Ward argued that Cincinnati's fortunes depend heavily on Burrow's availability. Taylor cannot compensate for his starting quarterback's absence while managing the rest of the team. Although the head coach remains responsible for the team's results, Burrow's health significantly affects Cincinnati's prospects.

Ward's argument ultimately highlights the challenge Taylor faces when his most important player cannot stay on the field.
