Few players possess both the size and athleticism that Steelers’ player Darnell Washington has. While he plays as a tight end, his physical dimensions and effectiveness as an additional blocker are more suited for an offensive tackle.

During a recent appearance on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward show, Washington was asked whether he had ever thought about moving to the offensive tackle position. Washington admitted that he can see it in the future, but not right now.

“I for sure gave it some thought,” said Washington. “How I imagine it, if it do come, it would be when I’m done running routes.”

Washington explained that he still wants to catch passes and perform his role as a hybrid player. He seemed to be open to the idea of joining the offensive line at some point in the future, when he can afford to prioritize size over athleticism.

“But I think for me it would probably be later on down the line. And that’s when I eat whatever I want. But as of right now, nah,” Washington stated.

The Steelers, who consider his versatility as both a blocker and a pass catcher valuable, signed him to a four-year, $42 million contract extension on June 4.

Standing at six-foot-seven and weighing about 300 pounds, as per his own admission, Washington has become one of the NFL’s best blocking tight ends.

The switch to tackle probably will not happen anytime soon since he is coming off his best season. He had career highs of 13 starts, 31 catches, 364 yards, and 16 first downs in 2025.

Moving to the offensive line isn't the only thing Washington talked about on the Not Just Football with Cam Heyward show. He also opened up on his viral play against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Washington Reacts To His Viral Play Against Bengals

One of the most viral plays last season was Washington’s run against the Bengals in Week 11, where he bulldozed through three defenders. On the show, Washington spoke about how he approached and executed the play.

“Boom, crossing route. Once I land that clean stiff-arm. I was like, ‘Oh yeah, it’s rumbling and tumbling,’” said Washington, “If you pay close attention, I was thinking about hurdling him at the end.”

It went on to be the first ever play to sweep the finalist nominations and win the Angry Runs award from NFL Network’s Kyle Brandt. Washington also mentioned how immediately after the play, he knew it was going to be all over social media.

“Try to delay stare at him for a little bit. Catch my breath for a little bit,” said Washington. “After that I was like, yeah, I can’t wait to open Instagram.”

The Steelers will be hoping to see many more such plays this season as well. Meanwhile, Bengals fans probably don’t want to relive the moment anytime soon.
