Since Ben Roethlisberger's retirement, Pittsburgh has been on the lookout for a long-term answer. Even with Aaron Rodgers leading the depth chart, the $6.5 billion organization has been linked to Brendan Sorsby ahead of the NFL Supplemental Draft.

Speaking on the Steelers Collective, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ray Fittipaldo explained that NFL teams have resources dedicated to investigating prospects when off-field questions arise.

“They also have somebody who’s in law enforcement on their staff,” Fittipaldo said on June 17. “They are paid members of the staff, and they help take care of things when things go awry off the field. Little bit of a legal problem, an arrest here, okay."

According to NBC Sports, the attention around Sorsby stems from an NCAA gambling investigation that led to his ineligibility. The Texas Tech QB admitted to g*******, including b****** on Indiana while he was rostered there.

Fittipaldo's words make it evident that NFL teams are likely conducting their own investigations before Sorsby enters the Supplemental Draft in July.

"The Steelers and other teams have people to take care of that,” Fittipaldo stated. “They also do a lot of digging into personal background information on these guys.”

After legal challenges and court rulings prevented him from continuing to play college football, Sorsby ultimately chose to enter the Supplemental Draft.

With Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph, Drew Allar, and Will Howard already in the quarterback back room, Pittsburgh will thoroughly examine every detail before deciding whether Sorsby fits into its future plans.

Would Brendan Sorsby fit Pittsburgh's current plans?

Pittsburgh's coaching staff has spent the offseason working closely with quarterbacks Drew Allar and Will Howard as part of the team's long-term priorities.

Analyst Brett Blizinski highlighted that the ongoing work is one of the main reasons why many believe that the focus remains on the players already in place.

"While it is believed Sorsby would have been taken high in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Steelers are focused on rediscovering playoff success," Blizinski wrote on Steeler Nation on June 19.

While Pittsburgh continues developing the young QBs, Aaron Rodgers is expected to lead the offense in 2026.

Blizinski noted that adding another quarterback through the Supplemental Draft may not fully align with these priorities.

"Drafting a guy like this, even if it would just be in the Supplemental Draft, somewhat goes against what they are trying to accomplish," Blizinski wrote on June 19.

With the Supplemental Draft approaching, the Steelers continue gathering information, but their focus remains on building a roster capable of returning to playoff success as quickly as possible.
