The Baltimore Ravens are facing a self-inflicted roster crisis at center after failing to keep Tyler Linderbaum long-term. Baltimore reportedly offered him a four-year, $88 million contract worth $22 million annually.
But the Las Vegas Raiders offered him a three-year, $81 million deal averaging $27 million per year. The situation has now left the Ravens searching for a replacement and potentially opened the door for trade discussions with the New York Giants.
The center generating buzz is John Michael Schmitz, drafted in the second round as No. 57 overall in 2023. He played 788 offensive snaps during the 2025 season and finished with a 60.5 overall PFF grade, ranking 29th among 40 qualified centers.

According to Fansided's G-Men HQ, Schmitz would be a better and more reliable option compared to an aging free agent. Ravens GM Eric DeCosta must now decide if the trade is worth the risk.
This acquisition, if it happens, would actually be an improvement. According to Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors, DeCosta admitted that the current situation with the Ravens is a total mess. He also hinted that the Ravens would screen the trade markets.
Yet it is Schmitz's poor form that might pose a problem for the Ravens if he doesn't get over it.
Schmitz Struggling With Form-Related Issues
John Michael Schmitz's 2025 season ended prematurely because of injuries. He played eight games before injuries sidelined him midseason. He was inactive in Week 8 vs. Denver, later sidelined for the remainder of the season.
Eric DeCosta, who ranks 4th in the list of NFL GMs according to NBC Sports’ Patrick Daugherty, will have to make a sharp call. Now, whether it will pay off or not is up to Schmitz's ability to recover.
Schmitz possesses the physical tools to rebound from his recent struggles.
While this whole situation became a reality due to Linderbaum, who turned in one of the better seasons among NFL centers in 2025, earning a 79.8 overall PFF grade that ranked fifth at the position across 1,007 offensive snaps.
His run blocking stood out the most with an 83.2 grade, while he gave up 26 pressures, including two sacks, and was flagged five times during the season.
