The Pittsburgh Steelers rewarded their reliable kicker, Chris Boswell, with a record-breaking contract.
"Steelers have agreed to terms with K Chris Boswell on a four-year, $28 million extension," ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Monday.
He now ties with Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey in average salary. Aubrey signed a four-year, $28 million extension with the Cowboys in April.
"The $7 million average per year ties him with Brandon Aubrey for highest paid kicker in NFL history, per CAA Football. Boswell is now locked in with the Steelers through the 2030 season," Schefter added.
Last season, Chris Boswell made 27 of his 32 field goal attempts (84.4%) and 42 of his 43 point-after attempts (97.7%).
These contracts have raised the market rate for kickers in the NFL, and the massive figures have not gone unnoticed.
Chris Boswell's $28M Deal Divides Fans
The veteran kicker will receive $14.7 million in guaranteed money, a base salary of $3.12 million, and an average salary of $7 million, per Spotrac. Not everyone is convinced he deserves that kind of money for his role on the field.
"$7M a year for a guy who kicks a ball 3-4 times a game? Meanwhile QBs are getting benched for missing reads. NFL officially lost its mind," commented a fan on Schefter's post.
While some felt the deal was too rich, others took a more lighthearted view.
"I think I'll teach my kids how to be a kicker," a fan wrote.
But the loyal Steel City fans backed up the move to sign Boswell.
"Probably the real reason they stayed 'decent' for so long is having a kicker like Boswell. Good move Pittsburgh," wrote a fan.
However, one fan did point out the dip in Boswell's performance last season. The veteran kicker made just 27 field goals last year, compared to his league-high 41 in the 2024 season.
"Idk how I feel about this. Love Bos but last season wasn't the season to make this move. I needa see improvement," a fan chimed in.
But fans largely clapped back in support of the Steelers locking in Boswell.
"Very good signing. Bos is best in the biz and deserves it. He always hits in the clutch and is able to kick in the Burgh which is very difficult. Best kicker to ever wear the black n gold and he deserves every penny. Congrats Chris Boswell!" commented another.
With Boswell locked in through 2030, the Steelers have secured one of the most dependable kickers in the league for years to come.
Whether the price tag is justified remains up for debate, but Pittsburgh clearly had no hesitation making the move. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
