The Cincinnati Bengals freed up around $10 million in cap space this week after restructuring Joe Burrow's contract ahead of the 2026 season. It's a move that gives the front office a bit more flexibility after a busy offseason where they went heavy on defensive upgrades.

Cincinnati already made a big splash by trading for Dexter Lawrence. It also brought Boye Mafe, Bryan Cook, and Jonathan Allen in free agency. The restructure frees up salary cap space while keeping the team's core intact going into the new season.

"Bengals restructured the contract of QB Joe Burrow, creating $10 million in cap room. This move allows Cincy to operate without putting itself in a tough spot, cap-wise. This is due in part to the cash needed for the Dexter Lawrence trade," wrote Adam Schefter on X on Wednesday.

The Cincinnati Bengals adjusted Joe Burrow's contract ahead of the 2026 season, creating some extra breathing room under the salary cap as they manage an active offseason.

According to Reuters, the team entered the move with limited cap space and had options to free up more room depending on how the contract was reworked.

Burrow's salary is being split by converting a portion of his base pay into a signing bonus. With roughly $7 million shifted this year, the rest will be spread across future cap years.

The structure of the deal doesn't change what Burrow earns overall. It simply shifts how the money is accounted for against the cap over time.

The Bengals also wrapped up the draft signing with rookie defensive end Cashius Howell, which means the full 2026 draft class is now officially locked in.

Burrow, who signed a long-term extension in 2023 with significant guarantees, has also backed the Bengals' aggressive approach this offseason.

Joe Burrow Opens Up About AFC North Changes Ahead of 2026 Season

The AFC North is heading into the 2026 season with plenty of new faces on the sidelines. And Joe Burrow expects that to create some uncertainty early in the season.

"It'll certainly be interesting early in the season with three new head coaches, three new defenses, and that's always difficult early in the season to deal...And so, you're kind of flying blind early in the year," Burrow told USA Today's Sports Seriously on June 8.

Baltimore hired Jesse Minter, Pittsburgh brought in Mike McCarthy, and Cleveland turned to Todd Monken, giving all of Cincinnati's division rivals fresh schemes and approaches.

Burrow explained that the lack of film on that new system makes it harder to know exactly what to expect when the season begins.

But the Bengals quarterback sees it as an "exciting challenge," stressing that Cincinnati is also in a similar situation, with a roster full of new hires.

"We're going to go win a lot of games this year and play great and win a Super Bowl," Burrow told reporters last month.

Despite the unknown surrounding the division, Joe Burrow and the Bengals are entering 2026 with high expectations after a busy offseason.
