The Cincinnati Bengals entered the 2026 season with enormous expectations, boasting one of the NFL's most talented passing attacks. However, Joe Burrow and company have struggled to consistently deliver the performances expected of them. Even their Week 5 victory over the Miami Dolphins left plenty to be desired.
Burrow completed 23 of 32 passes for 190 yards and four touchdowns, helping Cincinnati secure a 31-24 win. While the touchdowns were impressive, the Bengals struggled to put Miami away, and their ground game remained a significant concern. Chase Brown managed just 30 yards on 10 carries, continuing a disappointing stretch for Cincinnati's rushing attack.
Those issues could prove costly as the Bengals attempt to dethrone the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC North. Burrow's passing ability remains a major advantage, but Cincinnati cannot expect him to carry the offense every week. The Bengals need another reliable dimension to their attack if they want to compete with their divisional rivals.
Speaking on PFF's NFL Show, Cris Collinsworth explained why establishing the run will be crucial to Cincinnati's ambitions.
"The Cincinnati Bengals are going to have to establish that if they're going to knock off the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Baltimore Ravens."
The message is clear: Cincinnati must establish its running game. A more effective ground attack would take pressure off Burrow, make the offense less predictable, and create better opportunities for the team's dangerous receivers. Without that balance, opposing defenses can focus on containing the passing game.
Joe Burrow Needs More Support From Cincinnati's Running Game
The Bengals have the talent to challenge the AFC's best, but their offensive balance remains a concern. Getting Brown going should be a priority, especially after his recent struggles on the ground.
A stronger rushing attack would also help Cincinnati control possession and protect leads late in games. Burrow can still be the centerpiece of this offense, but he needs help from the players around him.
If the Bengals can finally establish the run, their offense could become far more difficult to defend.
