Duke Tobin: Immediate Impact Drove Bengals' Draft Decision

The 2026 Cincinnati Bengals started the offseason with a void left by Trey Hendrickson. Now, a New York Giants player's trade to fill in that void will bring impact to the team, according to Bengals Director Duke Tobin.

Duke Tobin’s explanation for the Dexter Lawrence trade sheds light on how the team has assurance of immediate impact, something you don't necessarily get with a draft pick.

“One of the nice things about trading a 10th pick for an All-Pro,” Tobin said via the team's website. "You know exactly what you're getting. And you're getting immediate impact. That was something that was a big decision point for us. We get immediate impact instead of impact as we go. So that was important."

Three straight playoff misses, a defense that ranked second-last in total yards allowed (over 6,000) and last in rushing yards allowed (2,500), and a franchise quarterback with little patience meant the window for another rebuilding cycle was basically shut.

Lawrence, a three-time Pro Bowler, signed a one-year, $28 million extension to stay with the Bengals through 2028.

In fact, that wasn't the only veteran addition. Pro Football Talk's story highlighted how other experienced names, such as Bryan Cook, Boye Mafe, and Jonathan Allen, were also added in free agency.

Safety Caleb Downs and edge rusher Reuben Bain Jr. were interesting prospects on the board at No. 10, but Tobin made it clear Monday at a press conference that the Bengals didn't want to be “reliant” on rookies.

For a team whose defensive rankings have tumbled recently, betting on a finished product instead of potential was more than strategy, it was a necessity.

Bengals Assistant GM Comments on Dexter Lawrence Trade

Just yesterday, on Locked On Bengals, Mike Potts faced the question everyone was thinking: What changed for the Cincinnati Bengals to finally go this aggressively?

"I think you have to be selectively aggressive, and this time everything just aligned," Potts replied in conversation with James Rapien and Jake Liscow. "We do like a lot of the pieces that we have...that's not to just say we were one piece away and Dexter is the only piece that we needed..., because I think we're going to continue to work through that now, even after the draft."

Now that the draft has concluded, the Bengals also have a better idea of what trades need to be made for a final roster. Eventually, the Bengals made seven total picks with a second-round and a third-round pick.

"We like a lot of these guys that we added in the draft and even undrafted free agency as well," Potts further said. "It's a continual process that we're going to work on all the way up through the season, but we thought Dexter was a really big piece that could really improve our roster."

Lawrence had not signed an extension with New York, had asked for a trade, and the Giants chose to move on instead of letting the tension spill over into the season, gaining a first-round pick in the process.

The Bengals didn’t just sit back and hope the right player fell to them in the draft. They went and got one that fits already, and that says it all about where this team is headed.
