The Steelers didn’t just draft Drew Allar to add depth to their uncertain QB room. They see real potential in him, following which Allar has drawn comparisons from his current team.
Allar’s arm strength is the opposite of his footwork, and it seems even the Steelers see it, as the team compared Allar’s arm to the Cincinnati Bengals' QB Joe Flacco, according to ESPN NFL reporter Jeremy Fowler.
“Pittsburgh believes Allar has similar arm talent to a young Joe Flacco,” Fowler wrote.
Super Bowl XLVII MVP Joe Flacco proved his incredible arm talent on multiple occasions.
But the most memorable moment came in 2012, when the Ravens won the Super Bowl but could have been out of the running if it weren’t for the Mile High Miracle pass made by Flacco in the postseason.
He threw a 70-yard touchdown pass to WR Jacoby Jones on 3rd-and-3, with 45 seconds left on the clock, which sent the Ravens to an overtime win and subsequently to the AFC Championship Game.
His longest passing record is 95 yards, which he secured in 2016 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
This shows the kind of arm talent Joe Flacco had when he was young, and Drew Allar being compared to him is an honor on its own.
During his breakout year in 2024, Allar recorded 3,327 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions with a 66.5% completion rate.
And a scout from the NFC division seemed impressed by his arm strength as well, according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero’s article on X.
“He had a good end of the season [in 2024]. He can make throws that a lot of people can’t,” the NFC scout said.
Of course, Allar’s footwork needs work, but it could be developed soon with new head coach Mike McCarthy coming into play, as he has a history of establishing strong quarterbacks, and a team source showed confidence in that.
Another Time Drew Allar Received Joe Flacco Comparison
Drew Allar is regarded as having elite, “top-1%” arm talent, with effortless velocity and the ability to make every throw on the field.
And despite sustaining a season-ending ankle injury in 2025, he recorded 1,100 passing yards and 8 TDs in just 6 games. In addition to that, he proved his hard work in the pre-draft interviews, which also drew Joe Flacco comparisons.
“His knowledge of what they did at Penn State, his ability to call plays, all of it. He’s got a chance to be like a Joe Flacco. He’s big, he’s strong, he runs straight ahead fast,” an NFC QBs coach said as per Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.
Hopefully, the Steelers develop another strong quarterback in Drew Allar, who already possesses great talent.
