Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington has officially rewritten his family’s future. The 6-foot-7, 300-pound star recently signed a massive four-year, $42 million contract extension.

It is a massive shift from how Washington grew up. Raised in Las Vegas as the youngest of eight children, he faced severe poverty. At one point, things got so tough that they had to sleep inside a U-Haul truck. Washington recalled that phase during his interview with Not Just Football with Cam Heyward on June 18.

“Man, it was crazy,” Washington said, “You kind of pretty much hit all the main points. It was cool, though, being the last of eight and seeing their journeys and all that stuff unfold for them.”

As the youngest of eight siblings, he witnessed his brothers’ and sisters’ journeys firsthand. One older brother stood out as a cautionary tale. A talented basketball player with college potential, he dropped out during his senior year and fell into the wrong crowd.

“Seeing him go through that, when I reached college and started getting recognition and things like that, I always told myself: tunnel vision all the way through,” Washington said in the interview.

The tunnel vision helped him work his way up through poverty to reach college and then enter football. Washington also credits another brother who is one year older and now a Marine, for keeping him on track.

According to the player, the book-smart student-athlete served as a role model and mentor in the absence of a father figure.

“He was the hardest worker I ever saw,” Washington said. “If he saw me after school being a knucklehead... he always corrected me. I always tell him, ‘Who knows, if I didn’t have you as a brother, what would my story be?’”

That drive propelled Washington from Georgia to the NFL, where he continues to evolve as a dominant tight end. His story is one of resilience, family influence, and unwavering focus.

However, even in the NFL, he has a mentor who has been strictly guiding him, just like his older brother.

Darnell Washington Shares His Honest Take On Aaron Rodgers

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington recently shared what it’s really like to share the field with legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Speaking on Cam Heyward’s Not Just Football podcast, Washington explained that playing with the four-time NFL MVP requires an incredible amount of focus because Rodgers processes the game at such a high level.

“It was cool. But you’ve got to be on the same page.” Washington added, “Just playing with him and just his ball knowledge of pressures and checks, it’s 1,000 things he could check to, so you’ve got to make sure you’re paying attention, for one, and just being on the same page.”

According to Washington, players must always be ready for sudden adjustments. He also revealed that Rodgers takes preparation into his own hands, running private meetings just for the players to study hand signals and plays without any coaches around.

Ultimately, according to Washington, intense preparation always pays off during the season, making it essential for everyone to study hard and match the perfectionist quarterback's high standards.
