The Cleveland Browns have a big decision to make at quarterback this season. Both Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are competing for the starting job. While Sanders is fighting hard to lead the team, reports state that Watson is currently the favorite.

Former Browns Hall of Famer Joe Thomas shared his thoughts on The Rich Eisen Show when asked who would play more games. He thinks Watson has the upper hand:

“I think coming out of the offseason, it seems like Deshaun Watson is probably going to be the guy going into training camp as the starter,” Thomas added, “He looks pretty healthy coming off that Achilles tear that he had. And I think with the experience that he has playing football.”

Thomas's assessment underscores Watson's edge in experience, though durability remains a concern

The Cleveland Browns brought Deshaun Watson into the team through a major trade in March 2022. According to ESPN, since then, he has played only 19 games due to a suspension and serious injuries.

He missed the entire 2025 season following two surgeries on his Achilles tendon, which has sidelined him since late 2024. Before that, a major shoulder surgery cut his 2023 season short.

Over his NFL career, Watson has proven he can make big plays. He has thrown for 17,904 yards and 123 touchdowns. Thomas compares Deshaun’s experience with Sanders.

“And that's one thing Shedeur doesn't exactly bring you right now, is the ability to scramble. He's not exceptional at using his legs to get a first down, although he is very good at scrambling to make plays to be able to throw the football. I think Deshaun right now just gives that offense a little bit more versatility to be able to open things up and be more dynamic,” the 10-time Pro Bowler said.

Now, after years of recovery, Watson is finally healthy to play. But he still needs to battle against Sanders.

Shedeur Sanders Continues Closing The Gap In Browns QB Battle

Shedeur Sanders is working hard. The Browns are focusing heavily on matching his steps with the play design. According to recent updates, coaches have said he is moving his feet better and making quicker decisions on the field.

"We hammer the quarterbacks and the appropriate footwork that corresponds to the timing and space of the concept," quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian said as per DPD. "So you can tell without the full speed rush whether their timing is off, the timing mechanisms of the drop technique."

Reports from Browns' offseason practices suggested Sanders showed improvement during the final week of workouts. Now, he is fighting Deshaun Watson for the starting job.

While Sanders continues to make progress, Thomas believes Watson's experience still gives the veteran the edge as the Browns head toward training camp.
