The Cincinnati Bengals made major changes to their defense this offseason to help them get back into the playoffs. Their biggest move was trading their No. 10 pick in the 2026 draft to get star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence from the New York Giants. 

Head coach Zac Taylor is entering his eighth year leading the Bengals. While he took the team to the Super Bowl in 2021, Cincinnati has missed the postseason for three straight years. Because of this, Taylor is under intense pressure to win now, but he remains confident that he can fix past mistakes. 

"We know what it takes," Taylor said. "We know a lot of times why we've failed and what we have to do to correct it. Maybe I was blind to things that haven't enabled us to have the seasons we've had. You learn from that experience like anything. I'm going to be a better coach five years from now than I am today." 

Reports from  Charlie Goldsmith on Fox 19 indicated that Taylor used the 2025 season as a learning experience. This offseason, along with Dexter Lawrence, the team has also brought in two more veteran players, Edge Rusher Boye Mafe and Safety Bryan Cook, to build a stronger defensive unit. 

Lawrence will be in charge of transforming the Bengals' defense, which ranked 31st in total defense and 30th in scoring defense. Mafe posted 44 pressures and 40 hurries last season, totals that would have ranked first on the Bengals. Meanwhile, Cook arrives with two Super Bowl rings to fix the tackling problems.

Cincinnati already has a powerful offense. By adding strong defensive leaders, Taylor and the team feel hopeful about the upcoming season. However, this year is critical for Taylor; if the Bengals fail to win again, he could lose his job. 

For now, the organization is excited about its upgraded team and ready for the challenges ahead. While the excitement looms, Taylor held everyone accountable for the 2025 season.

Zac Taylor wants the Bengals to be disappointed with their last season's gameplay

Taylor is using last year's disappointing results to fuel his team this summer. Before training camp even began, he made the most use of a whiteboard during their very first team meeting. 

Fox 19 reporter Jeremy Rauch shared the news on X on July 29.

“Dalton Risner told us Zac Taylor wrote '6-11' on the board in the team meeting before camp. He wants them to see the number to be a motivated p*****-off group.”

As per Jeremy Rauch, the number serves as a harsh reminder of their record from last season, which caused them to miss the playoffs for a third consecutive year. They witnessed the worst record since 2020 when they lost 11 games.

He hopes that constantly seeing that record will keep his players hungry and angry heading into the 2026 season. The message fired everyone up, but the intensity got out of control and led to fights during the first practice.

In one argument, Ja'Marr Chase removed DJ Turner’s helmet and threw it into the air. Jalen Davis then stepped in to face Chase, and later he frustrated Mike Gesicki by jumping on his back during a different play.

The coach wanted a motivated team, and he got one. Now he needs to make sure that intensity is directed at future opponents and not at teammates during camp.
