The Cincinnati Bengals decided to lock down their entire 2026 rookie class by signing second-round draft pick Cashius Howell on June 9. The standout defensive end from the Texas A&M Aggies signed a four-year rookie deal, worth just over $12 million.
The Bengals' front office is thrilled to have him on board. While watching recent practices, assistant general manager Mike Potts gave team reporter Dan Hoard a positive review of the rookie's skill set.
“I think the quick wins he can give us as a rusher is really dynamic,” Potts told Hoard, according to Cincy Jungle.

Howell is already justifying that $12 million price tag at practice. He is coming off a dominant 2025 college season where he racked up 11.5 sacks. The defensive end also led his conference and took home SEC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
“His arsenal of rush tools and the moves that he has — I don’t wanna speak for anybody else — but I thought it was second-to-none in this draft class," said Potts as reported by Cincy Jungle.
According to ESPN's data, the Bengals ranked No.32 with a 29% win rate when it comes to pass rush win rates in 2025. So, Howell is going to fix that.
Known for his explosive speed off the snap and a non-stop motor, Howell also finished near the top of the nation with a 28.8% win rate on true pass sets in 2025.
It is higher than 2026 NFL Draft second-round defensive end picks like TJ Parker, who had a 15.4% pass rush win rate last year.
His unique mix of polished moves and natural agility makes him a prime candidate to step in and make an immediate impact for the defense.
With a heavy, revamped defensive line designed to swallow up blocks in the middle of the field, Howell will have plenty of 1-on-1 opportunities to rush the quarterback.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor Talks About The Bengals Defense Moving Into The 2026 Season
Cincinnati completely overhauled its defense this offseason. The team brought in major impact players like defensive tackles Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen, safety Bryan Cook, and defensive end Boye Mafe. In addition, safety Kyle Dugger and nickelback Ja’Sir Taylor are pushing for significant roles.
During a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor explained how this veteran presence will elevate the team's chemistry and boost the development of their younger players.
"We put ourselves in a really good spot," Taylor said as per AtoZSports. "I’ve been through a lot of seasons where expectations are high, but you got to put in the work to be able to do that. And I really like our team chemistry across the board."
This mix of veteran talent aims to fix past issues. In recent years, Cincinnati struggled to balance age and experience. They relied too heavily on fading veterans, then pivoted to an overly young lineup that lacked guidance.
The 2026 unit finally finds the sweet spot with proven leaders in their prime. The recipe is set. Now Taylor and his defense must deliver.
How do you think Howell will leave his mark on the defense? Let us know in the comments.
