Bengals Make Franchise History With DJ Turner Ahead of Contract Talks

While no extension has been signed yet, it does feel that Cincinnati has plans for DJ Turner. The Bengals recently allotted Turner a new jersey number, which would mark the first time in franchise history that a Bengals player has worn that number.

As DJ Turner's contract negotiations approach the discussion phase, he was recently spotted with a "0" jersey number for the 2026 season. This. The 2023 second-round pick is scheduled to become a free agent in 2027. Looking at his contributions, the Bengals will hope to retain him.

Recently, the Bengals released a new video showing their OTAs where Turner was seen doing his drills wearing the no 0 jersey. Turner used to wear the jersey no 20.

In 2025, he made 16 starts in his 17 appearances. He also recorded 18 passes defensed and made 2 interceptions. What is interesting about this number is that it usually isn't handed down to just anyone.

It was Turner's strong performance that got him his preferred number. His 73.3 overall Pro Football Focus (PFF) defensive grade and a 78.1 PFF coverage grade for the recent 2025 season were surely a part of the reason.

Turner is now waiting for his new contract. At present, he is set to make about $3.6 million on the final year of his rookie deal.  The cornerback, however, wants things to go smoothly, which has impressed a fellow NFL insider.

Insider Likes DJ Turner's Way Of Handling Contract Situation

NFL insider and FOX 19 Sports Director Joe Danneman was impressed by the way Turner was handling the situation around his contract negotiations.

Speaking to James Rapien on the First Word show, this is what he shared.

"I was also pleasantly surprised to hear DJ Turner and the way that he's handling [his contract situation] because you think back to Trey Hendrickson in a similar situation— the way that was handled, compared to how DJ Turner seems to be handling his contract situation— a breath of fresh air," said Danneman.

The Bengals know a thing or two about negotiations going south, especially with Trey Hendrickson. Last month, the 4-time Pro Bowler left for the Baltimore Ravens after half a decade and 61 sacks for the team. But this doesn't seem to be the case with Turner.

Turner's negotiations are going without much hassle. He is showing up for the OTAs and leading by example. Moreover, he also made it clear to his agents to defer contract talks so it doesn't distract the team during ongoing OTAs.

As things stand, it looks like the Bengals have the edge in getting the deal done. The fans are now set to simply be waiting for an official confirmation.
