Bengals’ $40.25M Safety Celebrates Homecoming with Reds Honor

For Bryan Cook, this moment felt bigger than football. The new Cincinnati Bengals safety returned to a city that shaped him, but this time in a different role.
Standing as an honorary captain for the Cincinnati Reds was homecoming for the safety, who was signed by Cincinnati from Kansas City. Cook spoke about that moment during his interaction with WLWT’s Jaron May.
"It's definitely a childhood dream of mine," he said. "I played baseball since I was young, so having the ability to come out here and do this for a team that I've been following since I was young, it's a beautiful thing."
Cook made his love for the Reds evident in his first press conference as a Bengal. He sported a Reds cap, with a golden 'C' right in front of it.
Bryan Cook played at Mount Healthy High School and was a standout athlete. After a brief stint at Howard University, he pursued his college career with the Cincinnati Bearcats before being picked by the Chiefs in the draft.
Cook brings a lot of help to the Bengals defense. He had an exceptional season in 2025, hauling in 85 tackles. He has developed into a great player over these four years, and fans best know him for the interception he caught in the air in the 2025 Super Bowl. He signed a three-year, $40.25 million contract with the Bengals this offseason.
After two years, he's back where he belongs.
Cincinnati Is A Family Affair for Bryan Cook
This stint at Cincinnati is definitely an important stage in Cook's career. It is special because this is his home, but the signing was even more special because of who he gets to share this with.
"I'm coming back with a whole family; wife and kids," Cook told WLAT. "I can't put into words how I feel right now, but I'm hoping that my play and my interacting with the city gives a lot of inspiration for like younger generations for me."
The safety met his wife, Jayla Thornton-Cook, when they were at Howard. At the Reds game, Bryan was also seen carrying their young daughter, Jaycee. This moment was a family affair for the Cooks.
Now, fans will hope that being back in his native town will spur him to become even better this season.
"Obviously putting the work in on the field, that's second nature to me now," Cook added. "Like I said, now I'm doing it for just a bigger thing, for the city and for the community.
Perhaps down the line, Bryan Cook can hope to return to Reds games many more times with his family, cheering for his favorite baseball team!
