Initially, TJ Slaton seemed like an easy choice for the Bengals to cut. By letting him go, the team could have saved about $6.4 million in cap space, especially as Slaton is entering the final year of his two-year deal.
Moreover, the Bengals had already added big names like Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen, so Slaton looked like a player that the Bengals could let go to save cap space. Kristopher Knox of the B/R report had previously reported on the same.
“The Bengals should be able to request a fairly decent return for Slaton, given the lack of blue-chip defensive linemen in this year's draft. Teams that missed out on one should at least give the Bengals a call.” Knox wrote.
However, the Bengals have learned the hard way that a team can never have too much depth on the defensive line.
In recent years, injuries to key players forced the team to rely on inexperienced backups, hurting their overall performance. Keeping Slaton ensures that even if a starter gets hurt, the defense won't fall apart.
Slaton also plays a very specific role: he is a run-stuffer. Slaton’s job is to take up space and stop the run. It's crucial for keeping star players fresh and allows the coaching staff to rotate players frequently throughout a game.

In the 2025 season, T.J. Slaton became a reliable anchor for the Bengals' defensive line, suiting up for every single game. He finished the year with 52 tackles and tied his career-high with 3.0 sacks, proving to be much more than just a space-eater in the middle.
While he didn't log any forced fumbles, his 17-game consistency and ability to disrupt the run made him a consistent anchor for the Cincinnati interior.
As such, Cincinnati views him as too valuable to lose. The only way he might be moved is if the team signs a veteran like DJ Reader.
Which Player Was Suggested To Replace T.J Slaton?
The Cincinnati Bengals spent the offseason fixing their defense, but some think they aren't done yet. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggested that the team should trade for New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, potentially for a 2027 fourth-round pick.
Knox wrote, “It certainly feels like Kayvon Thibodeaux's time with the New York Giants is nearing its end. The 2022 first-round pick has flashed a high ceiling (11.5 sacks in 2023) but is entering a contract year without a headlining spot in the pass-rushing rotation.”
However, while Thibodeaux has talent, adding him might not be the best move. Firstly, his contract would be hard to fit under the Bengals' current salary cap. Secondly, the Bengals already have a crowded group of pass rushers fighting for playing time.
Bringing in another veteran makes the roster decisions more difficult than they need to be. Instead, the Cincinnati Bengals seem to be focusing on honing the skills of their internal talent pool.
