The Bengals spent much of the offseason focusing on upgrading their defense. New additions have strengthened several areas of the roster, but linebacker remains a position that still requires reinforcement.
It is also where Bobby Wagner's name has repeatedly surfaced as a possible fit. The veteran linebacker had been frequently linked to Cincinnati.
However, another team has entered the discussion. Recently, FOX Sports identified the San Francisco 49ers as the “best fit” for the veteran linebacker, creating another potential landing spot for the 11-time Pro Bowler.
The reports had added another layer to Wagner's free agency situation and raised questions about whether Cincinnati will make a move before its contenders do.
“It's fair to say that Wagner is well past his peak. Aged 35 now, if he were anything close to his best, he would've been snapped up by somebody by now", Dylan Oakley wrote on Stripe Hype. "However, he does bring experience, something the Bengals lack in a linebacker.”

Despite his age, Wagner continued to prove his worth in 2025. He finished the year with 79 solo tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions while appearing in all 17 regular games with the Washington Commanders.
His availability has been another key factor, as he has not missed a regular-season game over the last four years.
Oakley further suggested that if Cincinnati pursues Wagner, the deal should be short-term.
“The only thing I would tell the Bengals is to sign Wagner to a one-year deal.” Dylan Oakley wrote.
According to him, such a move would allow the Bengals to add veteran experience without affecting the long-term development of their younger linebackers.
Cincinnati has spent much of the offseason addressing the defensive concerns. The additions of Boye Mafe, Jonathan Allen, Dexter Lawrence, and Bryan Cook have developed the unit.
But even with such moves, linebacker remain a position that continues to attract attention.
For now, Wagner remains one of the biggest defensive names still available. Although the Bengals continue to be mentioned as a possible destination, the 49ers are now another contender to watch out for.
Bengals May Not Be Done Making Splash Moves on Defense Yet
After adding players like Dexter Lawrence and Bryan Cook, Cincinnati could still explore ways to strengthen the second level of the defense.
One name that stands out is Jordyn Brooks. The Miami Dolphins linebacker put together an impressive 2025 season, finishing with 183 tackles and 99 solo tackles for loss.
He is also one of the league's most productive defenders and has earned All-Pro recognition for his performance.
However, with 2026 being the final year of his three-year contract with the Dolphins, the community has been abuzz with trade rumors, per heavy.com.
For Cincinnati, adding another experienced linebacker like Brooks would address a position that still lacks proven depth. The Bengals have focused heavily on improving their defense, and such a trade would further strengthen the unit.
